Ceramic vs Steel: TRiPEAK Bearing Technology Explained

TRiPEAK’s bearing ranges differ in ball material, race design, sealing and lubrication. Here is how the manufacturer describes those differences, and how to use them when choosing a part.

What the TRiPEAK series names mean

Official range Ball specification described by TRiPEAK
JetStream Pro G3-grade ceramic balls as part of the Rotation Optimized Ceramic system.
C-Series G5-grade ceramic balls with a precision-machined steel race.
S-Series P05 precision steel ball bearings.

These are the range descriptions on the TRiPEAK technology page. Use the material and series stated on the exact product when ordering. A hybrid ceramic bearing combines ceramic balls with metal races; the balls are not the whole bearing assembly.

Why the races and seals matter

The balls roll on the bearing races, so the surface of those races is part of the running system. TRiPEAK describes nano-coated races within its JetStream Pro technology. Its ZERO Contact Seal article explains a separate design choice: covering the bearing without the rubbing contact used by a traditional contact seal.

Pulley lubricant and hub lubricant have different jobs

TRiPEAK identifies SUPRA LV for ceramic pulley bearings, where low-viscosity running is the focus. Its ETERNA LV article identifies ETERNA LV for ceramic bottom brackets and hub bearings, with an emphasis on durability, reliable operation and quiet running. Use the lubricant and service procedure specified for your component.

Choose the part in three steps

  1. Match the application. A headset, hub, pulley and bottom bracket have different fit requirements.
  2. Match the dimensions. Check bearing codes, shell and crank specifications, or the exact derailleur model.
  3. Choose the listed bearing version. Several pulley sets are offered as separate ceramic and stainless steel listings. Keep the tooth combination and compatibility the same when comparing them.

Use the bottom bracket finder or wheel bearing finder for the part match, then compare the available pulley wheel versions. For AOPW construction and fit, read how the TRiPEAK oversized pulley upgrade works.
